Gender Based Violence (GBV) Program

Usawa’s GBV program is a multi-faceted initiative aimed at empowering victims and survivors of gender-based violence through education, advocacy, and support. Grounded in the #NameIT #KnowIT #ACT framework, the program emphasizes three fundamental steps:
- KnowIT – Understanding the various forms of abuse by recognizing their signs and characteristics.
- NameIT – Naming the abuse is crucial to acknowledging the problem and initiating change.
- ACT – Taking informed actions tailored to the context, whether through legal, social, cultural, or traditional means, always prioritizing safety and well-being.
Our activities include:
- Facilitating focus group discussions with victims and survivors.
- Conducting social media advocacy to raise awareness.
- Providing mentorship to individuals affected by GBV.
- Linking participants to psychosocial support and legal services.
The program recognizes that action is not always legal; it often requires culturally sensitive approaches, safe spaces for reflection, and structured support to develop sustainable solutions like financial independence or safe exit strategies. Usawa strives to create safer communities and a deeper understanding of GBV and its impact through this initiative.
